Overview of Communications Application Area

NB-Photonics is highly active in the area of silicon photonics for telecom, datacom and interconnect devices. The ability to realize complex circuits on a very small footprint and potentially for a very low cost makes silicon photonics a promising platform for datacom and telecom applications. The latter now mostly rely on complex transmitters and receivers compatible with multi-level data modulation and coherent detection. Several of the NB-Photonics interests focus on establishing optimal building blocks (tunable lasers with narrow line width, complex receiver chips, etc) required to build these devices. For optical interconnect applications, NB-Photonics has a significant presence in developments of devices with the crucial characteristics of massive parallelism (and hence compactness), ultralow power consumption and integration with electronics.
